“Wild west, west coast, these are the girls I love the most.”
Drea stopped all the squealing.
Her voice rang. “Hey girls?” We stopped tugging our tops and angling our faces at the mirror.
“Think about it,” she said. “We’re all happy.”
And one by one we all paused, retraced the steps of the last little while, and smiled a private smile.
She was right, and bless her forever for making us stop and bookmark this glorious summer.
We ARE all happy. And we’ve all got a toe in each others’ hot tub. None of us got where we are without each other. We all invested and we all paid off, and while it’s rarely that neat and tidy, that’s exactly what happens when women are each other’s friends.
Happy Birthday Lacey.
I hope you know that year after messy, unexpected year, your girls will always be your girls.
To commemorate Aurora’s birthday, she and took a train trip up the coast to LA. We splurged on business class tickets, and definitely ate our money’s worth in free coffee and pastry.
We did lots of shopping in the various ethnic neighborhoods that surround the train station, Little Tokyo and the Mexican old town area, Olvera Street. But for me the highlight was being joined by my little sister ZezZee, my childhood friend Jessica, and the legendary Miss Kendra, for dinner in Chinatown.
And as we left, I paused for a moment to drink it in, how much I love my life. And how big a role the wonderful friendships I have with women, with these amazing women, have in that happiness.
Found in the bookstore at the Self Realization Fellowship bookstore, between “How to Cultivate Divine Love,” and “Bringing Out the Best in Our Relationships With Others.”
I bought all three, Ican’t wait to leave them lying on my desk at work or something.
In other news, fear me bitches.
Hanukkah began precisely as I left my job.
Hanukkah teaches us that what little we have will be enough. And in the light of that hope, what I have doesn’t look so small anymore.
I wasn’t checking my email just now, or writing a text. I was taking your picture. You caught me, and there’s been plenty of times you haven’t.
I do it because you’re prettier than you think. I do it because I like all your different smiles, not just the one you save for the camera. And I do it because the older I get the faster time seems to go by and whenever I think to myself “where DID the year go?!” …….. it’s easy for me to remember the answer.
I spent it with you.
As some of you might know, my actual birthday falls on December 23rd, which is a ridiculous time of year to have a birthday. (You heard me, Jesus.) So I’ve done the sensible thing and rescheduled. This year it fell on Sept 25th. What day it falls on is subject entirely to my whim.
As you can see, I picked a good day.
Angelica – “Aw, it was so good to see you.”
Valancy Jane – “No, it’s so good to see YOU. You’re the best.”
Angelica – “No YOU’RE the best.”
Valancy Jane – “No, YOU.”
Angelica – “No, YOU.”
Valancy Jane – “Actually, I think Aurora is the best.”
Angelica – “Oh totally.”
